What is so Essential about these Oils?

Ok,  so we are sure you have all heard about these “magical” essential oils that cure you of all sorts of ailments, from tight muscles to a simple cold or flu.  However have you ever actually given them a try?  We don’t know about you, but sometimes we get tired of going to the GP just to be told antibiotics is our only solution.  So we thought why not research some natural methods of healing and see what all the fuss is about!  (Of course in no way or form are we dissing the good old Docs, but a little natural experimentation never hurts anyone right!?)

SO first, what actually is an Essential Oil?
Essentially (pun intended) essential oils are a highly concentrated form of a plant or flower. The oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, branches or roots and then the physical form of that plant is bottled up in a nice little syrup ready for us to use!

Below we have chosen our top 5 Essential Oils and given you the low-down on how they can help improve your personal health, and essentially your life!

1. Eucalyptus Oil eucalyptus-02

An Australian favourite! Eucalyptus oil is commonly used to unblock noses and de-congest da chest! A little bit of Eucalyptus oil on a tissue or hanky (if you’re 74) works wonders for a stuffy nose, or rubbing some on your chest, back and soles of your feet can help a cold while you sleep.

Tried and tested Lavender works wonders to soothe a headache, fight insomnia and calm the body. Lavender is an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant oil that has a multitude of functions! Lavender oil even repells mosquitoes, it is also great to restore tired skin, just add a few drops to your

3. Frankincense Oil

frankincense Frankincense can be added to your cleanser or facial soap to prevent acne. It will help heal and calm burns, rashes, cuts and scrapes. Frankincense also makes a great massage oil because not only will it purify your skin but it will put up a protective barrier in your aura to prevent other people’s negativity from effecting you. Nifty hey!

Tea Tree oil has anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s well-known for curing bacterial and viral infections of the face and mouth, including sore throats, earaches, and acne & blemishes, and works exceptionally well treating oily skin. Add a little Tea Tree Oil to aloe vera for the perfect antiseptic anti-inflammatory sunburn treatment.

5. Peppermint Oil

With its natural mint flavor and scent, Peppermint is useful in a number of personal body care recipes and around-the-house mixes. Peppermint’s powerful scent can change the environment and air quality very quickly thus acting as an air deodorizer. Peppermint also has an amazing ability to increase alertness to aid with concentration.

So you’ve hit your closest hippy shop and stocked up on all these transformational bottles of oils, but what next..how do I even use the things you ask!

Without getting too sciency, amazingly, there are around 40 million trillion molecules in one drop of essential oil. These molecules are so small, that they can enter your body through the skin or lungs and disperse everywhere throughout your body.

Below are the common methods of putting your oils to use!

Vaporiser: Just add a few drops of your desired oils to the water compartment, and let your vaporiser work its magic!

Spray Bottle: Add approx 2 drops per 100ml of water in a spray bottle & spritz away! Perfect for creating a relaxing atmosphere in any room of your home!

Inhalation: Add 3 drops to a bowl of hot steamy water. Place a towel over your head to trap in the steam, and inhale deeply for around 10 minutes!

Massage Oil: Add around 2 drops to 12mls of basic massage oil, and rub away!

Bath: Add a few drops of gentle oils to your bath water!

Compress with Face Washer: Fill a basin with hot water and add a few drops of desired oil. Soak a face cloth in the water, rinse and press softly onto skin.

Tissue Method: Add 1-3 drops onto a tissue or hanky, and inhale deeply.

Gargle: Add specific oils known for gargling (eucalyptus, lemon etc.) to some water, gargle the solution then SPIT IT OUT! Don’t swallow it!

One last tip! Make sure when purchasing your oils, they are not synthetic “fragrance oils” as they are harmful to your skin. Always look for “pure” Essential Oils that are 100% natural and organic.
