If you’ve been following us for the last few weeks (firstly, thank you, thank you, thankyou!) you will hopefully be aware that we attended a pretty cool little event called Radlivin’ on the 20th of February. (If not check out our post “Ready to get rad” for the deets.) Radlivin’ for us was such a significant point of our small journey thus far, so we thought we’d share with you the top 10 things we learnt from each of the speakers, and the event as a whole, across the day.
1. LOOK AFTER YOUR LOCALS – Jess Abraham, Editor In Chief of Tidal Magazine
It is so important to create a community base as your support when starting any new project.
This one really opened our eyes as we realized we had been overlooking our local community whilst dreaming of bigger and better things. This advice inspired us to create the “local legends” corner of our blog and also reminded us that we have so many talented people much closer than we thought.
2. IT’S NOT ALWAYS GOING TO WORK OUT THE FIRST TIME AROUND – Oscar Martin, Co-Founder & Director of Pedestrian TV
Failure is ok and can lead to bigger and better things. Oscar also talked about the reactions of friends and family when he and Chris first started their initial DVD magazine, explaining that you just have to block it out when people start doubting and questioning what you’re doing. If you think you’re onto something, however crazy it may be, you have to go for it no matter what! Trust your gut.
3. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF – Cait Miers, Surf & Fashion Photographer
Take information you learn on board but also stay true to your vision and believe in what you create. Cait attended Uni as her career was taking off, and despite university tutors encouraging her to improve her technical skills, she continued to do what worked for her, and in doing so people responded, allowing her to take the Instagram world by storm.
She also encouraged to be constantly emailing and gaining connections in the industry, not loosing hope when you don’t get replies.
4. THE LOVE YOU FEEL FOR YOUR DREAM HAS TO BECOME BIGGER THAN YOUR FEAR – Connie Chapman, Life Coach & Blogger
Fear is completely normal, but you have to love your dream enough to combat your fear, and go for it! Connie reminded us that small steps can lead to huge progress, for example in her own experiences deciding to share her personal blog on her facebook page. Connie also made us really think about what we want to do and where we want to go with these three questions:
What dreams have you been dismissing?
What fears and beliefs are blocking your dreams?
What connects you with your heart?
We really encourage you to take a few moments to answer these questions for yourself, as they delve into deeper truths you may not be consciously aware of… it did for us anyway!!
5. HAVE A CLEAR VISION AND SHARE IT WITH YOUR TRIBE – Jamie Green, Founder of One Night Stand Sleepwear
Jamie encouraged us to establish a clear vision, which really resonated with us as prior to #RadLivin we were a bit all over the place with what we really wanted to achieve through Uninhibited. He also talked about having a ‘tribe’ be it friends, family or both, and how having these people who you know will support your dream is vital. Jamie also shared stories about the highs and the lows of start ups, (including having to sleep on the floor of his café when bankrupt), which was refreshingly honest and reminded us it is not always smooth sailing to get to where you want to go, and that’s OK.
6. THE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE – Grant Trebilico, Founder of One Wave
Beginning his presentation in the most unique way of the day, Grant burst into the room grooving away to Avicci’s ‘Levels’ and man did he have a good feeling! Breaking the ice early on Grant inspired us with his personal story of transforming what was once a problem in his life into the core of his passion and career. He also taught us that ideas can evolve with time, starting with Fluro Fridays, One Wave has now created a surf school program to encourage confidence in people who suffer from mental illness.
7. A PINKY PROMISE CAN LEAD TO A WORLD OF SUCCESS – Axel & Ash
Axel and ash taught us that what starts as a lighthearted idea between friends can become a hugely successful venture! (Which rings true to us…Hopefully!) The girls also spoke about the importance of physically writing down your dreams and goals, and watching them manifest!
8. DONT TELL SUMMER ARE FREAKIN’ AWESOME
Need we say anymore, the gorgeous girls from Don’t Tell Summer pulled off an absolutely awesome day. From free donuts (salted caramel, do we really need to continue?) to free booze, they truly delivered everything they had promised and more! Word on the street is that Radlivin’ might possibility be heading to the states! So if this has grabbed your interest and you can get to Cali, stay tuned and all we can say is DO IT! It is Info, advice, and rad interactions money can’t buy!
9. OFFLINE SUCCESS = ONLINE SUCCESS
In a generation and world that is growing more online everyday, it is easy to get caught up in the social ranking created by likes and followers. #Radlivin brought individuals face to face and broke down the barriers of social media, reminding us that we are all just people wanting a dream, no matter the followers or our online status.
10. NO DREAM IS EVER TOO BIG
We thought this really sums up not only what all the guest speakers and the girls at Don’t Tell Summer promote, but also the major lesson we as Uninhibited took away from RadLivin when returning home to Melbourne.
Overall we think the day provided us with the motivation and kick-start we needed, only recently launching Uninhibited. We would like to give a huge Thank-you to all those involved in putting on such a RAD event and of course all the gorgeous people we had a chance to meet, or simply share a room with!
Love C & M x
